Medical Devices

From ophthalmic devices and surgical tools to diagnostic components and precision‑machined implants, the St. Louis region supports a diverse and growing medical device manufacturing ecosystem. Companies in our region benefit from proximity to nationally recognized health systems and research universities, a strong base of life‑science and engineering talent, and a supplier network that spans multiple functional areas. Washington University in St. Louis is a national powerhouse in biomedical research, with $683 million in National Institutes of Health grants, the 2nd highest in the U.S.

Stereotaxis, a manufacturer of robotic surgical systems, was founded in St. Louis in 1990. Today it is a publicly traded leader in minimally invasive robotic surgery with over 100,000 patients treated.

Other global medical device companies have operations in the St. Louis region, including Bausch & Lomb, Biomerieux, Kindeva, and Zeiss.  Zeiss recently announced a $24 million expansion of its research and production facility here.
