A ribbon-cutting this week celebrated the opening of Powell Hall at the Jack C. Taylor Music Center, the historic and now fully renovated home of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. The opening — the culmination of a two-year, $140 million project — marks the SLSO’s 146th season and Powell Hall’s 100th birthday.
The Jack C. Taylor Music Center encompasses Powell Hall and a 64,000-square-foot expansion that includes an entrance lobby, education center, and backstage wing for performers. The center is named for Taylor, the late founder of Enterprise Rent-A-Car (now Enterprise Mobility, a founding GSL investor) and a prolific donor to St. Louis arts organizations.
The Bottom Line: The SLSO is the country’s second oldest symphony orchestra and a bedrock for the arts in St. Louis. The renovations offer the world one more reason to visit St. Louis, said Marie-Hélène Bernard, SLSO President and CEO. "We’re going to invite reporters from around the world, from leading publications in music, but also in other sectors. And it is our job as we work with Greater St. Louis, Inc. and Explore St. Louis and other arts institutions to really make sure that the talk about St. Louis goes to a different level.”
