On Thursday evening, Missouri lawmakers traded the Capitol for the baseball diamond, taking the field at Busch Stadium for the Greater St. Louis, Inc. Show-Me Softball Showdown.
The friendly competition brought together legislators from across the state for an evening of softball, relationship-building, and fun. The event gives Missouri legislators a chance to connect outside the legislative session, strengthen relationships, and build camaraderie while recognizing the work they do on behalf of the state and the St. Louis region.
The evening began with players arriving at Busch Stadium before guests and spectators gathered for a happy hour. Greater St. Louis, Inc. Senior Director Tim Brinker and Partner Jeff Mazur helped kick off the event, followed by introductions of the East and West teams and team photos. The National Anthem was performed by Scott Air Force Base Technical Sergeant Raymond Ruffin, and Missouri State Treasurer Vivek Malek shared remarks before kicking off the game with the first pitch.
Team captains included State Senator Kurtis Gregory and Representative Jeff Vernetti for Team West and State Senator Jason Bean for Team East. By the end of the night, Team West had claimed the victory.
“We’re here playing some softball at Busch Stadium; it’s absolutely fantastic,” Representative Vernetti, who represents Camden County, said. “Events like this, camaraderie and building fellowship just makes things better. This isn’t one party; this is Republicans and Democrats all joining together. And it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience to play at Busch Stadium.”
He added with a smile: “One way or another, Missouri is coming out on top today. I really like Missouri’s chances in this game.”
Representative Vernetti co-captained Team West alongside State Senator Kurtis Gregory of the 21st District, who hails from Marshall, Missouri. “For me, it’s important to always get together outside the building — we spend so much time in there arguing about policy, and this is one spot where, hey, we’re playing softball, getting to know each other better, and having some fun.”
State Senator Bean from Missouri’s 25th District described the event as outstanding. “What a beautiful night here in Busch Stadium,” Sen. Bean said. “This event is fantastic. First of all, it brings us here to St. Louis, and it brings us here doing something together that’s not in the Capitol so we can get to know each other more on a personal level, get to know their families, and that’s how we learn to legislate even better.”
The evening concluded with a trophy presentation and a full group photo on the field, capturing the spirit of an event that was about more than competition.
