Fast Company has named the St. Louis Art Place Initiative to its list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies of 2026. This year’s list shines a spotlight on projects that are shaping industry and culture through their innovations.

“Arts-based community development is one of the best tools in St. Louis’ toolbox to strengthen neighborhoods, our artists, and our regional economy,” said Jennifer Allen, Executive Director of API. “In a time where so many are working to fix systemic issues, St. Louis Art Place Initiative is doing so on the ground, at the neighborhood scale.”

Founded in 2019, St. Louis Art Place Initiative has been proving a model to keep artists rooted in their neighborhoods through affordable homeownership, while reducing vacancy and working to create cultural assets to be owned by the community. Artists provide many cultural benefits to communities, but the traditional path to homeownership for those who work on a gig or commission-based income can be complicated. Through creative, win-win-win collaborations with partners, API makes an important contribution to artists’ lives while transforming vacancy.

“St. Louis Art Place Initiative is creating community and helping to build and sustain our world-class arts community from the grass roots. It’s great to see a prestigious national publication like Fast Company recognize their work,” said Ron Kitchens, Managing Partner of Greater St. Louis, Inc. “St. Louis has one of the strongest arts and culture scenes in America and is a critical component of what makes our region unique. By providing nearly 12,000 jobs and contributing more than $868 million to the regional economy, our region’s arts sector is a true engine for our growth.”
