Crime is down significantly throughout the City of St. Louis, reported the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department this week, as new data indicates a 16% drop in overall crime. In fact, the number of homicides in the city dropped to their lowest number in 12 years. And St. Louis County is also reporting similar decreases, with major offenses dropping 8.5%.

“These numbers are more than statistics — they reflect the hard work and dedication of our officers who are committed to protecting and serving St. Louis,” said St. Louis City Chief of Police Robert J. Tracy. “This is progress in the right direction while we continue to work with our community partners to build a safer St. Louis.”

The Bottom Line:

Thanks to increased collaboration, consistency, and dedicated law enforcement professionals, we’re seeing progress on what has historically been a major challenge for the St. Louis region. Local leaders don’t view this as a sign to slow down, however, but an opportunity to continue building trust and improving safety within the community.

“A safer St. Louis strengthens our neighborhoods, our economy and our future. These reductions are the result of collaboration across city government and the tireless efforts of officers, who work challenging and dangerous jobs and have every reason to hold their heads high,” said St. Louis City Mayor Cara Spencer.

“Chief Tracy is no doubt one of the best chiefs in the nation, and his leadership, combined with the great work of our officers out in the community, is a big reason why we’re seeing the public’s trust in the SLMPD grow, enabling our officers to solve crimes with the community’s help.”
