St. Louis is getting some major support in tornado recovery efforts. U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt led the state's congressional delegation in urging assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which will provide expedited disaster assistance to support private property debris removal in the City of St. Louis. The funding — FEMA will cover 75% of eligible removal, with the state of Missouri covering 25% — will supplement state and city recovery efforts. At the same time, FEMA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will offer their technical expertise to ensure “safe, efficient, and accountable debris operations.”
“This is a big win for St. Louis and will help us quickly and effectively help St. Louisans get uninhabitable buildings off their property, making it possible to move toward rebuilding after the tornado,” said St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer. “Getting this federal assistance is a result of great collaboration and strong bipartisan support from Missouri’s entire delegation to Washington. I particularly want to thank Sen. Schmitt and Gov. Kehoe for leading a tremendous push over the past few weeks to bring this help to St. Louis.”
The Bottom Line: We know that recovering from the tornado’s devastating path will be a long, hard road. But when we work together at every level — national, state, and local — we get farther faster. “Our office has been proud to work closely with Sen. Eric Schmitt, alongside the rest of Missouri’s federal delegation, and Mayor Spencer to ensure St. Louis can move forward and expedite its recovery,” said Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe.
